Past Continuous Tense

Past continuous tense digunakan untuk menerangkan hal-hal berikut:

  • Kejadian yang sedang terjadi pada waktu lampau.
  • Kejadian yang terjadi pada waktu lampau dan disusul dengan kejadian lain.
  • Dua kejadian yang berlangsung pada saat bersamaan pada waktu lampau.

Struktur Kalimat

Kejadian yang sedang terjadi pada waktu lampau.

Subjek + was/were + infinitive + -ing + objek

I was cooking an hour ago.
Jack was swimming before lunch yesterday.
You were listening to the news last Saturday.

Menerangkan kejadian yang sedang terjadi pada waktu lampau dan disusul dengan kejadian lain

Subjek + was/were + infinitive + -ing + objek + when + subjek + verba II

Valeriia was crying when I came.
You were sleeping when the telephone rang.
It was raining when she left.

Menerangkan kejadian yang berlangsung pada saat bersamaan pada waktu lampau

Subjek + was/were + infinitive + -ing + objek + while + subjek + was/were + infinitive + -ing + objek

We were making a fire while they were preparing dinner.
Jim was working while the others were sleeping.
Adam was singing while Maria was dancing.

Kalimat Tanya

was/were + subjek + infinitive + -ing + objek

Was he standing till five o’clock?
Was I falling asleep at the meeting?

What/where/when/why/who/how + was/were + subjek + infinitive + -ing + objek

What was Jane writing at the moment?
Who was crying this morning?
Who was travelling last Sunday?

Kalimat Negatif

Subjek + wasn't/weren't + infinitive + -ing + objek

I wasn’t cooking an hour ago.
Linda wasn’t playing the piano at the moment.
I wasn’t sailing last Saturday.

Simple Past Tense

Simple past tense digunakan untuk menerangkan peristiwa yang terjadi beberapa saat yang lalu atau masa lampau. Biasanya, past tense disertai dengan waktu yang jelas, misalnya yesterday, last week, a few minutes ago, two years ago, this morning, dll.

Struktur kalimat:

Subjek + Verba II + Objek


I saw Darya two years ago.

She went to the party last night.

She bought a ring the day before yesterday.

He worked hard last Monday.

They got married in 2022.

Jika kalimat tidak menggunakan kata kerja/verba, kita gunakan was dan were

Tidak menggunakan Did

Kalimat Negatif

Menggunakan did not / didn’t

Subjek + didn't + infinitive + objek

I didn’t see Daria yesterday.
Ahmad didn’t go to the party last night.
You didn’t work hard last Monday.
It didn’t rain heavily last night.
They didn’t get married in 2017.

Menggunakan was not(wasn’t) dan were not(weren’t)

Subjek + wasn't/weren't + ...

I wasn’t very well yesterday.
She wasn’t late last Monday.
You weren’t here last Friday.
The children weren’t noisy.
